Mammograms:
Due to the increased use of mammography, most women in the United States are diagnosed at the very early stages of breast cancer, before symptoms appear. Mammography screening can allow doctors to diagnose breast cancers before they may be discovered during a physical exam of the breast – before a lump has formed.
The average size of a lump found by a first mammogram is comparable to a dime. The average size of a lump found by accident is comparable to a half dollar.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure recommends that you Get Screened!
• Ask your doctor which screening tests are right for you if you are at a higher risk
• Have a mammogram every year starting at age 40 if you are at average risk
• Have a clinical breast exam at least every 3 years starting at age 20, and every year starting at age 40

Financial Hardships:
Screenings
Financial hardships should not stop you from being screened. If you are a resident of Kansas or Missouri, there may be help. Both Kansas and Missouri have a National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program which assists in paying for screening and diagnostic services if needed.
If you live in Kansas contact: Early Detection Works at 785- 296-1207.
If you live in Missouri contact: Show Me Healthy Women at 573-522-2845.
Early Detection Works and Show Me Healthy Women have age, income, and insurance eligibility guidelines. To find out if you qualify for these programs, please call the numbers above. These programs work with providers throughout the state to assist with the screenings.
